 日本トムソンは、「2019国際ロボット展(iREX2019)」(2019年12月18~21日、東京ビッグサイト)において、「世界初」(同社)とする液晶材料を潤滑剤に用いる直動案内機器「液晶潤滑リニアウェイ」を展示した。

 真空やクリーンルームなどの特殊環境下で用いられる直動案内機器の潤滑剤としては、油分の蒸発や発塵(じん)が起こりにくいフッ素系グリスなどが用いられている。しかし、潤滑性能や耐熱性などに課題もある。

 液晶潤滑リニアウェイは、この課題を解決すべく日本トムソンと山梨大学が共同開発した新たな液晶潤滑剤を封入している。グリスは基油と増ちょう剤から構成されるが、液晶潤滑剤は液晶化合物のみから成る。液晶分子が同じ方向を向いて形成する集合体の表面は潤滑油と同じ炭化水素鎖が並んだ状態であり、金属表面や集合体の表面の間で滑り合う仕組みになっている。また、集合体内の液晶分子同士は強い分子間力でつながっており、分子の離脱による蒸発も起こりにくい。

 他の潤滑剤と比較した場合、負荷耐久性はフッ素系グリスと比べて常温で40倍、高温で6倍、発塵量はリチウム石けん基グリスの10分の1以下。高真空環境下でのアウトガス特性も優れている。また、100℃の条件下でも蒸発による重量減少は見られず、転がり抵抗も低い値を示している。「2019年11月の発表から強い引き合いをいただいている。半導体製造装置など向けに提案を進めて行きたい」(日本トムソンの説明員)としている。
